Position Overview

A large inpatient behavioral health center in the Springfield, IL area is seeking an experienced Psychiatrist to serve as Medical Director . This is a leadership-focused role with a blend of administrative oversight and limited clinical responsibilities. The environment includes both acute and longer-term adult psychiatric units, with multidisciplinary teams supporting patient care.

What You’ll Do

The Medical Director oversees the clinical and operational quality of psychiatric services across multiple inpatient units. Responsibilities include:

Administrative & Leadership Duties (Primary focus):

• Provide medical leadership for psychiatric, nursing, social work, and psychological services.
• Develop, implement, and evaluate clinical policies, procedures, and treatment standards.
• Supervise clinical staff, offer guidance, and support performance evaluations.
• Participate in staffing decisions, team organization, and operational planning.
• Lead and attend key meetings, committees, and interdisciplinary case reviews.
• Oversee quality improvement initiatives, compliance, and documentation standards.
• Serve as a resource on mental health regulations, treatment standards, and clinical trends.
• Provide administrative call coverage (phone only, no onsite call).

Clinical Duties (Limited – as needed):

• Step in for patient evaluations or brief coverage when staffing gaps occur.
• Review complex cases or treatment decisions when escalated.
• Conduct evaluations related to certification, status reviews, and administrative needs.
• Participate in patient care reviews and occasional court-related processes.

Patient Population & Environment

• Adult inpatient population with a range of civil and justice-involved psychiatric presentations.
• Units range from short-term acute stabilization to extended-care psychiatric treatment.
• Typical patient interactions for the Medical Director are limited (approx. 12–14 patients as needed).
• Average daily volume for staff psychiatrists is 10 patients/day; Medical Director is primarily administrative.
• Full multidisciplinary support including physicians, nursing, social work, psychology, and therapy staff.
• Paper-based charting with transition to EMR in the future.

Schedule & Work Expectations

• Monday–Friday
• No weekends or holidays
• Minimum 37.5 hours/week
• 30-minute unpaid lunch
• Onsite role
• Administrative call responsibility via phone

Required Qualifications

• Active, unrestricted Illinois medical license
• Active CSL & DEA
• Board Certified in Psychiatry (ABPN)
• BLS certification
• Ability to work onsite and to perform standard inpatient psychiatry physical expectations

Preferred Qualifications

• Leadership experience within inpatient psychiatry
• Experience supervising multidisciplinary clinical teams
• Background in program development, policy creation, or administrative operations
• Familiarity with complex adult psychiatric populations
• Strong communication & team collaboration skills

Additional Notes

• This is an interim Medical Director role with potential for longer-term continuation.
• Credentialing typically takes ~45 days.
• Candidates must have a clean or reasonably clean NPDB profile.
• U.S. citizens or permanent residents preferred due to credentialing requirements.
